Plot[]

Mrs. announces the class is going to have a Pet day. Unfortunately, no dogs or cats allowed at school. Only caged pets. However, she'd let the kids only bring in a picture of dogs and cats. But a picture of Tickle is not as fun. Knowing that dogs and cats are prohibited from the school, Junie B. is upset.

On the ride home, Junie B. just cannot get over the no dogs or cats allowed rule, and comes home and talks to her grandmother about it. Grandma Miller says she could take her bird but Junie B. passed on the idea, since she had a bad history with him. Then Grandma jokes to her about a raccoon. With that, Junie B. excitedly wants to take the raccoon.

The next day, Grandma and Grandpa Miller are going on a fishing trip. They stopped by the Jones house so that they could borrow Robert's ice chest. Junie B. wanted to go as well, so she could catch the raccoon but Grandma Miller says the trip is only for them and their friends. When Junie B. asks about the raccoon, Grandma Miller explains that she was only kidding about the raccoon, much to Junie B.'s disappointment. Grandma Miller comforts Junie B. Suddenly, Grandma Miller goes to the vehicle and comes back with an earthworm, which extremely grosses out Junie B. However, when her mother shows her liking for the worm, Junie B. tries to briefly adapt to it. She names the earthworm "Noodle", and places it in a jar, to the point of finding even more little critters to call "pets". Unable to catch a butterfly, lizard, and grasshopper, she finds three ants carrying a cheese puff, to her joy. Finding a swatted fly she names "Buzzy", she places him, the ants, and cheese puff into the jar as well.

Moments later, Grandma Miller presents Junie B. with an ice chest. Inside the ice chest is a big fish, which absolutely overjoys her. She then names the fish "Sparkle", and then has an idea. She finds Tickles' leash, and puts that on Sparkle, giving her the idea to take him to Pet Day. However, Mrs. Jones immediately notices this, and deliberately disapproves of Junie B.'s idea of taking Sparkle to Pet Day since he is a dead fish. But, Junie B. doesn't think it is a bad idea, so she gleefully states that she'll take him despite his status, much to Mrs. Jones' dismay.

Fortunately, though, Junie B.'s idea obviously doesn't push through. Though, to make matters worse for her, she sees that the insects in her jar were spinning out of control, so she dumps them out of the jar, consequently dumping Noodle as well, much to her sadness.

As the morning goes on, Junie B. hasn't found one good pet to take, until Grandpa Miller opens the fridge to move the vegetables. Junie B. regains her joy, and grabs what regained her joy. At school, it is officially Pet Day. One by one, the children present their pets, and when Junie B. gets her turn, she shows the pet she chose: a fish stick she eponymously named "Fish Stick". Initially, everyone is stunned and speechless, until Junie B. and Mrs. see if the dictionary agrees with Junie B.'s fish stick. Thankfully, it does, and when Fish Stick gets an award, his award says "Most Well-Behaved", much to Junie B.'s extreme joy and pleasure.

Trivia[]

  • This book is slightly foreshadowed in Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business, when Junie B. considers bringing her baby brother Ollie in as a "pet" on Pet Day.
  • Mrs. somehow knows that Junie B. Jones has a dog, although she does not explain to her how that's possible.
  • Lucille is the only one to bring in a picture. In this case, she brings in a picture of her horse and wears equestrian clothing.
